Population decline, the process whereby the number of inhabitants of a given area diminishes, can no longer be considered a marginal phenomenon, as it is now affecting twenty-five countries, which together account for one fifth of the world’s population. To explain the phenomenon, it may be instructive to compare cases revealing a similar three-stage process of population decline.
