Lebanon: a Population Under Geopolitical Pressure

As well as its own crises, Lebanon has always absorbed those of its neighbours. This is certainly what happened in 2011, at the start of the Syrian civil war (2011–2024), in which several million Syrians were forced to flee their country. Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon received the majority of these refugees; over a very short space of time, Lebanon took in more than a million people. Did this sudden and massive influx affect the country’s demographic structure?
